Even though some performers do not get my applause for their performances, the active liberal ones get my respect for using their newfound position to help the rest of us. Most are liberal, not leftists, that’s not to say there are not leftists in show business. To their credit, most are among the first to jump on the anti-war bandwagon, not only is war morally wrong, it’s bad for business, and murder on tax rates – Wars have to be paid for, and having very little money, you can’t tax the poor. Oddly enough, entertainers are one of the few groups that do well during times or war, people are looking for a distraction, so it’s counter-intuitive is you look at it from a purely economic standpoint.
For example, Stephen Colbert sometimes riffs about being the son of a poor Appalachian turd farmer for a laugh, but his family growing up wasn’t close to wealthy. He grew up liberal. Yes, he earns eight figures a year now, but he earned a lot less working on Strangers with Candy and The Daily Show, and seriously struggled before he made it to TV. He has not forgotten how he and his family struggled, which is why he still fights for liberal causes. So why do new-money celebrities fight for liberal causes? I believe the essence of it is this: they remember how they struggled. They know tens of millions of Americans are still struggling. They want the USA to be a place where you don’t have to struggle like that to have a full and dignified life.
There is one pretty reliable group of rich people who tend to be more liberal, and that’s famous performers. They are nowhere near the wealthiest but they are one of the most visible. Since they are a group of high-profile rich liberals, it’s understandable why some might think that other rich people are liberal at roughly similar rates (they are not). Performers get particular hate from the political right, who imply that they “aren’t in touch with real America” or “don’t understand the problems of real Americans.” Now, is that bad press accurate? No. It’s a smear campaign to discredit and delegitimize them so regular non-famous Americans won’t listen to them. The truth is, most current famous performers came up from relative obscurity and earned their fortunes without a huge inheritance. They remember very well what it was like to be young, struggling performers and all that went with it: can I pay the rent, gotta keep the phone on so the agent can reach me, will it be peanut butter or ramen this week—and don’t suggest peanut butter ramen, that was a really bad weekend—dammit I can’t afford this flat tire, why are clothes so expensive even when I perform naked… it doesn’t all map exactly the same to the concerns of a factory worker, but it’s pretty close.
