The finer the threads or yarns that are used to weave a textile the finer that textile will be. If you’ve seen the words ‘thread count’ when looking at sheets, as an example, thread counts can vary from as low as 50–60 per square inch to as high as 700 and even higher if some devious counting methods are employed. Percale is a term that was long associated with better and best quality bed sheets and it used to mean fabric with a minimum thread count of 180 per square inch. A count of 250 when I was in my teens was considered very high and was not cheap! These days, counts routinely go to 400 or more but high thread count alone does not necessarily mean high quality. Sometimes it means they got sneaky and counted individual threads used in each yarn that was woven, and that can make the numbers much higher but it IS deceitful to do that. It also does not guarantee that the best quality fibres were used to spin the yarns that were woven. Genuinely fine yarns of high quality which are woven tightly do jam more fibres into less space and make a dense fabric which can be very light & soft but will also be quite strong and very smooth & silky feeling, very luxurious.
